Recommended Blog Posts #06

If you are like me and love to keep up with the latest news in the Database, SQL and Cloud world, this is your place. Here is a short list of the blogs posts that got my attention during the past week. I hope you like them!

Considerations for Running SQL Server on Kubernetes: “Kubernetes is an open-source orchestration and management system for containers. It is an exciting technology to learn once you begin to embrace the cloud platforms. As a DBA, how should you leverage running SQL Servers on containers and deploying them to Kubernetes? For this tip, we will discuss the different considerations before you begin deploying your SQL Servers images in Kubernetes.”

Cross-Region disaster recovery using Amazon Aurora Global Database for Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL: “This post shows how to set up cross-Region disaster recovery (DR) for Amazon Aurora with PostgreSQL compatibility using an Aurora global database spanning multiple Regions. Aurora Global Database uses global storage-based replication, where the newly promoted cluster as primary cluster can take full read and write workloads in under a minute, which minimizes the impact on application uptime.”

T-SQL Tips and Tricks: “T-SQL is a formidable procedural language for Microsoft SQL Server derived from ANSI SQL (structured query language). With just basic DML (Data Manipulation Language) syntax – UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT, SELECT – you can already do a great deal of database programming with scripts or stored procedures. In this tip we’ll go a little bit farther than the basics and show you some valuable SQL statements used in Microsoft’s relational database management systems. Little pieces of T-SQL syntax that might take you to the next level.”

Migrate SQL Server Reporting Services content to Amazon RDS for SQL Server: “In this post, we discuss how you can migrate existing SSRS content to an Amazon RDS for SQL Server instance using a PowerShell module. The content that can be migrated includes reports, data sources, folders, and all other items that you can create and store on SSRS. The source of the SSRS content can be any SSRS instance, including another RDS instance with SSRS enabled. We will also show you how to handle items that contain data source credentials so that your data source connections will work after migration. Finally, we will show you how to configure the permissions for your items after you migrate.”

Running Postgres in Docker – Why and How?: “The big question we hear quite often is, “Can and should we run production Postgres workloads in a Docker? Does it work?” The answer in short: yes, it will work… if you really want it to… or if it’s all only fun and play, i.e. for throwaway stuff like testing.”

And this is it. I hope you enjoyed reading them as much as I did. Have a nice weekend and keep yourself healthy!
